:D I'm glad we're on the same page here! I really don't like Murtagh, but I'm judging him be my standards as decent person. So when he finally was able to make a choice, he made the wrong one.

What really upsets me is the fact that during all his life he never did have a choice, then when he finally has it, he turns around and makes the wrong one, which makes him as cheezy as his father. <_<

He ran away from Galbatorix when he was required to kill innocent and guilty people. He caugh a glimpse of the measure of Galbatorix's scope of cruelty and vengefulness. He then did not want to be on either side so he was in a kind of gray area. He bad luck was arriving at the Varden and meeting the Twins who obviously were on Galbatorix's pay off list for a while now.

Murtagh is one character I pity the most. He may have been brought up in wealth, but he is the poorer than the most meager begger. A perfect example that money and riches does not guarantee happiness.
1. He was taken away from his mother at birth.
2. He was allowed to see her ONLY at Morzan's whims.
3. At the age of three, his monster, I mean father almost killed him.
4. His mom suddenly "disappears" and no clue where she may have been.
5. His mom comes back and in 14 days she died.
6. At the age of 18, Galbatorix invites him to dinner and later down the road, he shows Murtagh his true colors.
7. Murtagh runs away from Galbatorix and his friend, Tornac, is killed in the process.
When Murtagh killed the slave trader in the Hadarac dessert, I kind of had a hunch that he was not as sweet and innocent as he appeared to be; but I really pity him!
My guess is he'll die!

Great examples there lady phoenix. I too feel sorry and pity Murtagh. I rather like him and he's had a hard life. Although somehow I get the feeling that Murtagh himself would not want people pitying him(sorry the spelling). I think he may die but I am really hoping he doesn't cause I would be sad :(

Murtagh is a very weird case when coming to empathizing with his character. CP built up the readers feelings and led us to feel sympathy and admiration for him. The fact he did not have the option of making a choice in many of his life events confirms it.
Then when he finally has the option of a choice, he chose the wrong one. The moment he accepted to serve Galbatorix rather than die, he made a big oops there. (Power hungry, just like his father). Furthermore, if even after being under Galbatorix's order, he still had a chance of redemption and he killed that one when he killed Hrothgar. Now he really is doomed, at least for me.

There are three things that could happen. 1. Galbatorix dies dies and Murtagh is freed (most unlikely). 2. Eragon and Arya beat Murtagh, then drug him. 3. Murtagh is killed by Eragon.

I think that Galabatrix and Murtagh will die in the same battle

That's just it. It's a big choice.

Would you in conscience choose to serve someone who you know for a fact is a deranged killer? One who in time will send you to kill indiscriminately, both the guilty and the innocent? One who served you father before you and only knew cruelty and pain to him as a child?

Murtagh evidenced he was truly his father's son. Power over Death! He had to choose between what was right over what was easy. He chose what was easy, so eventually he'll pay the price; with his life.

Wow! perfectly summed up right there. Oh and that line about the right and easy thing...reminded me of Harry Potter a bit...hehe! No, you are absolutely right about this and I couldn't agree more.

I still think though that Murtagh still has some good in him but just for now he is a bit confused and whatnot and has chosen the path of darkness, etc.
