Dagnabit! I don't have my Eldest book with me. I can't look it up!
I am positive Joed was not too involved in battle matters. I remember he found the secret passage into Galbatorix's castle in a book.
Joed was described as being a scholar, I am not completely sure on this. I do remember that after the incursion into the castle he said he could not go back to being a scholar so he decided to help the Varden as best he could. That's when he followed in his father's business, (he was a merchant) and started to ships good to Surda for the Varden.
Joed did have a rapier, or as Brom called it, " a toad sticker" but in the time setting of the story it was not uncommon for people to go on and about with these types of weapons.

Why was Brom complaining about Jeod's rapier, unless Jeod was using another weapon when they first met. This brings me back to the past tence "when you had your scar and your sword" (or something like that).

You didn't seem to either read my post or didn't understand it. Joed was never a Rider and I don't think he'll ever be one.

"I never expected you to become a merchant," said Brom. After all the time you spent in books. And after finding the passageway in that manner! What made you take up trading instead of remaining a scholar." Eragon 185

INSTEAD OF REMAINING A SCHOLAR is the clue here. It proves Joed was never a Rider, at least to me.

It goes on and says:
"After Gil'ead, I didn't have much taste for sitting in musty rooms and reading scrolls. I decided to help Ajihad as best I could, but I'm no warrior." Eragon, 138

So being the case that he never had been a warrior, it is highly unlikely he'll ever become on.

If the book doesn't convince you, I don't know what or who can!

Ok. Pg nbr. 504 (of Eldest) about halfway thru the page.

Eldest, page 504 reads as follows:

"If what you say is true, how can you expect me to trust you?"
"I cannot," answered Joed.
"Yet you ask me to become a fugitive for you?"
"You once offered to leave your family and wander the land with me. You begged me to spirit you away from Teirum."
Once, I thought you were terribly dashing then, what with your sword and your scar."

The scar Helen is referring to is the one on his forehead. It never mentions anything about a scar in his hand. If you need further proof, here's the following:

Eldest, page 489
"As it was, he [Roran] reserved his attention for the tall man with graying hair who stood behind an oval writing desk. The man─who Roran assumed was Joed─looked about as tired as Roran felt. His faced was lined, careworn, and sad, and when he turned toward them, a nasty scar gleamed white from his scalp to his left temple. To Roran, it bespoke steel in the man. Long and buried, perhaps, but steel nevertheless."

I've kept my promise I'MNOT CRAZY. Joed was not a River and I can bet whatever you want, he never will be. :D

I'm not sure. It would make sense, not just because of the sword and scar, but because of his bond with Brom. Brom was a Rider. How would Jeod know him if Jeod wasn't a Rider? It doesn't seem to me that Jeod's that kind of person, but...who knows?

Brom new Jeod because they were both closely affiliated with the Varden.
