THE PERSIAN EMPIRE Current Ruler: Fath Ali Shah Current Royal House: Qajar Dynasty (Since 1796) Official language: Persian Official Religion: Islam Capital: Tehran Government: Autocratic Monarchy Brief Overview: The Qajars, originally tribal chiefs Safavid service, consolidated their rule in Iran in during the last two decades of the 18th century. The able and brutal Qajar leader Agha Muhammad took advantage of then existent political chaos to expand his control of the country. In 1796, after crushing the Zand dynasty and taking Khorasan from its Afsharid rulers, he was crowned shah in his capital of Tehran. Fath Ali Shah The reigning Shah, FATH ALI SHAH, enjoys much support within his nation, mostly from tribal and clerical leaders. The Shah is known for his active philanthropy in constructing many mosques and madrases. Under Fath Ali Shah, the Qajar bureaucracy has expanded many times over. He has created many additional administrative positions, such as controller general. Fath Ali's many sons rule as governors and administrators of the major provinces and cities. Crown Prince Abbas Mirza, the heir apparent to the Peacock Throne, maintains his own provincial army as the governor of Azerbaijan. Under Fath Ali, Persia has had increased interaction with European nations and has embarked on a path of modernization for its military and economy. |

THE MILITARY OF THE PERSIAN EMPIRE REGULAR ARMY The beginning for military reform along European lines was made during the Napoleonic Wars under the tutelage of Fath Ali Shah, and his son the Crown Prince Abbas Mirza. Both believe that regiments of European style training and equipment would greatly improve Persia's Military strength. Attempts at Military reform have been largely based along the Caucasus and the Western border. ![]() ![]() Nizam-a-Jadid Soldier and Officer Growing modernization in the Persian Army, is increasingly eliminating the Crown's dependence on tribal and provincial chiefs for the raising of military forces. European officers have been continually employed in order to help drill, raise, and lead troops in Persia. These new forces, are called the Nizam-a-Jadid. A standard Nizam-a-Jadid division of Infantry has 10,000 men, made primarily of regimental Infantry of the Line, but has also specialized battalions of Grenadiers and Light infantry. They often contain four batteries of artillery, 40 artillery pieces in each. A Nizam-a-Jadid Cavalry division also has 10,000 men, and is primarily based around Medium Cavalry (Dragoons), but also has specialized Cavalry for Light and Heavy roles. For example Nizam-a-Jadid Infantry Division ------------ 4 Regiments of Line Infantry (7800) 2 Batteries of Artillery - 20 Artillery Guns (200) 1 Battalion of Light Infantry (1000) 1 Battalion of Grenadiers (1000) For example Nizam-a-Jadid Cavalry Division ------------- 3 Regiments of Dragoons (6000) 1 Regiment of Heavy Cavalry, (2000) 1 Regiment of Light Cavalry, (2000) MILITIA Persia practices no modern form of conscription in the European sense, it instead relies on a a conscript bunichah system (tribal and local levies). These are categorized as nothing more than militias in either cavalry or infantry form. These forces are also generally irregular in warfare, preferring to fight in a traditional manner native to Persia and Afghanistan. Artillery guns are generally light or are Zumbooruck camel artillery. Traditional Cavalry For example Militia Infantry Division ------------- 5 Regiments of Infantry Militia (10,000 militiamen, ?? artillery guns) For example Militia Cavalry Division ------------- 5 Regiments of Cavalry Militia (10,000 militiamen, ?? Artillery guns) |
