Kingdom of Two Sicilies![]() King : Ferdinand I ( IV of Naples ) di Borbone Heir : Francesco I, Duke of Calabria Population : 6,700,000 (0.8% growth) Capital : Naples Official Language : Italian GDP : £ Revenues : £1,300,000 Currency : scudo In 1799 the French invaders established an illegitimate Republic in Naples . This Republic was however always limited to the arounds of Naples, because a revolt of peasants in favour of the Dinasty soon menaced its power . The rebels, led by Cardinal Ruffo and supplied by the British Army, soon found themselves in Naples and deposed very violently the ruling class of the Republic . The Borbons stayed in charge until 1812, when Napoleon established his general Murat over the throne of Naples . The Borbons refuged themselves in Sicily, where, to survive, they had to give huge priviledges to the Sicilian lords who would notoriously encourage and give birth to the famous trend called " Mafia " . In 1814 Murat sided with the Anti-Napoleonic forces, hoping to mantain his territory, but this was useless as both the Britons and the Austrians had ties with the Borbons and wanted them to rule South Italy . So in 1815 we find Murat along Napoleon in his desperate one hundred days before Waterloo ; after the defeat of Napoleon, Murat led his troops to defend what he considered to be his kingdom, but war defeated by overwhelming forces near Pollenza . He was successively shot . So the Borbons came back but something had changed : the moderate and relatively progressist Ferdinand IV ( now Ferdinand I ) had become psychotic and obsessed by revolutions and the administration was divided in the two factions of the progressist Murattians and the conservative nobles who had stayed in the side of the dinasty during all the French occupation . A constitution was however promessed to the two kingdoms : Sicily and the Continental Siuthern Italy ( la " Terra di Lavoro ", where however nobody worked seriously, observed some German travelers ) . Now the Kingdom is in full restructuration, infinite complications but also possibilities are wide open for the Kingdom . |
