![]() General Overview Capital: Copenhagen. Government: Absolute Monarchy. Monarch: Frederick VI. Population: 1,070,000. Currency: Danish Krone. Official Language: Danish. Ethnic Group: Scandinavian. During the beginning of his regency, Frederick instituted widespread liberal reforms with the assistance of Chief Minister Andreas Peter Bernstorff, including the abolition of serfdom in 1788. Crises encountered during the first years of his reign included the disagreement with the British over neutral shipping. This resulted in two British attacks on Danish shipping in 1801 and 1807. The former attack was known as the Battle of Copenhagen. His wife is his first cousin Marie Sophie of Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel), a member of a German family with close marriage links with the Royal families of both Denmark and Great Britain. They married in Gottorp on 31 July 1790 and had eight children. The youngest of them, Princess Wilhelmine, became the wife of the future Frederick VII of Denmark. Danish Royal Army![]() - Seventeen Regiments of Line Infantry, divided into four battalions each of 800 men. Two of these battalions are kept separate as militia units that are meant to supplement the regular battalions as depot battalions during wartime. Two Regiments are formed into a Brigade, the largest permanent unit in the Danish Army. Overall strength is 27,200 Regulars and 27,200 militia. - Five Regiments of Light Infantry, divided into two battalions of 800 men each. One of these battalions is kept separate as a militia unit to supplement the first during wartime. Regiments are attached to Line Brigades as needed. Overall strength is 4,000 Regulars and 4,000 Militia. - Denmark has twenty-two batteries of Artillery, four guns each. The Cavalry is divided as such: - One Life Guard Regiment of 130 men total. - Eight regiments of Dragoons with 650 men each. - One regiment of Hussars, 1100 men total. - One regiment of mounted chasseurs, 1100 men total. - One regiment of Bosniaks (Polish light cavalry), 370 men total.
