Government of Venezuela The President of Venezuela (El Presidente de Venezuela): In the government of Venezuela, the President serves as both head of state and as head of government. His powers under the Constitution of Venezuela are immense, with the ability to dismiss judges, legislate, and issue emergency declarations and decrees. The current presidential term is for four years with one possibility of immediate reelection, and with the constitutionally guaranteed recourse of holding a popular recall referendum anytime within the last three years of a presidential term. The current president of Venezuela is José Tadeo Monagas ![]() The Legislative Branch of Venezuela: Currently, the legislative branch in Venezuela is a bicarmeral legislature, with power shared between two Houses. The National Assembly has 165 seats overall, and members are elected by popular vote to serve five-year terms, and may be re-elected for a maximum of two additional terms. These legislative agents are elected by a combination of party list and single member constituencies. Three Assembly seats are by law reserved for the indigenous peoples of Venezuela. Judicial Branch: The judicial branch is headed by the Supreme Tribunal of Justice, which may meet either in specialized chambers (of which there are six) or in plenary session. The justices are appointed by the National Assembly and serve 12-year terms. The judicial branch also consists of lower courts, including district courts, municipal courts, and courts of first instance. |
