Political Affairs

Iguala Party's National Standard

Since the creation of the Iguala Party, the want and need for a Legitimate Monarch to rule over Mexico has spread across the nation. Not so suprisingly, the Iguala Party has over the years become the equivilant to the Liberal Party before it's rampant corruption. With many Champions of the party preaching liberal Ideals, a number of conservatives withen the Capital are becoming concerned. But these liberal ideals coincide with the peoples strong feelings towards setting an almost Absolute Monarchy, and maintaining the Churchs strong position withen what would be the Mexican Empire.

General Ampudia has convinced Marshal Zaragoza of the fruits of a Moderate Government, rather then a full conservative or liberal Government. But the Military is by no means the only place where the Moderate Ideology of the Iguala Party have taken hold. It is speculated that the Moderate and Iguala Party will come to Dominate the Mexican Government after the elections in Autumn of this year.

1854 Elections

Mexico's 5th President, José María Yáñez

In the 1854 elections, President Urrea ran once again for the Conservative Party, but his former Vice President, and now Hero of Guymans, José María Yáñez ran as the Moderate Parties Candidate. Yáñez took as his running mate, Pedro Negrete, the founder of the Iguala party.

To absolutely no ones surprise, the Moderate and Iguala Parties swept the elections. Yáñez and Negerete were voted into power by overwhelming numbers, aswell together the moderate and iguala parties took a total of 189 seats in the National Congress.

Creation of the Mexican Foreign Legion

Posted Image
Lieutenant General Ignacio Zaragoza

With the large ammounts of immigrants pouring into Mexico, the Government has decieded to introduce a new system for turing imigrants into citizens quicker. The creation of the Mexican Foreign Legion serves this purpouse perfectly. The Legion is comprised entirely of foreign nationals living withen Mexico, as a way to help them earn citizenship for them and their families. Joining the Legion is purely a voluntary measure, but the good pay, along with the guarentee of citizenship helps to draw in recruits.

At the moment some 5,000 men, mostly from the port cities of Mexico, have joined the Foreign Legion. The Legions goal is to reach Corps strength by the end of 1855. The first 5,000 men have begun training under the supervision of Lieutenant General Ignacio Zaragoza. The 1st Battalion of men shall be equiped with the recently purchased Gewehr Model 1854 Rifles.

1855 Constitution

Vice President Negrete

The 1855 Constitution was a moderate constitution drafted in Mexico during the presidency of José María Yáñez and vice-presidency of Pedro Celestino Negrete. It instituted several Liberal policies, including: freedom of speech; freedom of conscience; freedom of the press; freedom of assembly; and the right to bear arms. It guaranteed basic civil liberties for all Mexicans; reaffirmed the abolition of slavery; eliminated debtor prison and all forms of personal servitude; It eliminated all internal tariffs within Mexico. It provided that any slave who set foot on Mexican territory would become free by that fact alone, and would acquire the right to protection by the nation's laws, thus making Mexico a haven for African Americans escaping slavery in the United States.

Though the Constitution implemented many liberal institutions, it's leaving the church and military alone eased the acceptance of the constitution of the bulk of the conservatives.

Spring 1855

Military Reforms

The German Gewehr Model 1854 Rifles arrived in mid 1855, and were immediatly put to test by the Mexican Army. These tests showed just how much more useful the breechloading rifles were, which persuaded Marshal Zaragoza not to hand them over so easily to the Foreign Legion, but to instead outfit a Division of his elite V Corps with the new rifles. With the completion of training of the Foreign Legion, Marshal Zaragoza was eager to test them in combat, aswell as test his son Lt. General Ignacio, who now commands the Legion after overseeing their training. Marshal Zaragoza's prayers were answered when the Spanish ambassador to Mexico mentioned the current Spanish conflict in Africa. As Mexico and Spain were formally allied, Zaragoza made preperations for a battalion from the Foreign Legion to go to Africa as an expiditionary force. The force will be led personally by Colonel Martín Perfecto de Cos, Lt. General Zaragoza's 2nd in command.

Aswell, the production of rifled muskets to arm Mexico's Military has begun. The Model 1855 Aguijón, is to be mass produced and used to arm the Mexican Army, a total of 100,000 rifled muskets are to schedualed to be completed before years end. aswell the Caribbean Fleet has come into port to be refitted with explosive shell firing guns.
