Summer 1852 Military Affairs ![]() New Shell Gun foundry complex near Acapulco, Guerrero With the purchase of rights to produce the Explosive Shell guns durng late 1851 men in Mexico City have presented plans to construct large foundry complexes to produce these arms. While the project would be rather expensive it was infact a great way to produce new jobs for dislocated Mexicans across the nation. The obvious main purpose of the industrial project is to arm the Navy with advance weaponry in advance. President Urrea while announcing the beginning plans of the project to parlimant made it clear of his concern over the growing tensions in South America. What is clear is that no major figures in Congress are yet to raise a question or doubt. José Joaquín de Herrera making it clear to his fellow members that Mexico should be given time to buildup and develop it's armed forces. With the introduction of Shell based technology to the Mexican Navy, the refitting of the Pacific Squadron to use the new technology will take place in the Major portcity of Acapulco. With the already large dockyard in place, the refitting of the entire squadron will be able to be achived nearly simultainiously. The refitting process is estimated to begin by the end the year. 16.5 pounds have been spent. With the growth of the Peruvian Navy, Captain Commenfort of the Pacfic Squadron has continuasly asked for more ships, but thus far his requests have been denied. The Mexican Army has finished the reconstruction efforts in Central America, and as such send out surveyors to scout out a location for the construction of a large military base to act as Headquaters to the 2nd Army. -------- |

Winter 1853 Political Affairs As Juan de Zumárraga accompanied by the 20 service men and the 3rd Battalion of the Jalisco Lancers arrived in Ensenada, they were greated by Don Montero, who tried his best to pass bribes on to the head of the Secret Service. But to his great dismay, his bribes were refused and he was arrested, along with a huge number of corrupt officals.. With Don Montero removed from his position as Govenor, Don Diego de la Vega was appointed as the Govenor-General of the State until offical elections could be held. In the meantime Don de la Vega was charged with the responibilty of rebuilding the State Government. The Indian Removal Act of 1852 was a law passed by the Meixican Congress in order to facilitate the relocation of Amerindian tribes living all over Mexico proper, into the unihabitted Petén region of Guatemala. The Removal Act, part of a Mexican government policy known as Indian Removal, was signed into law by President Urrea on May 28, 1830. The Native Populations were given enormous amounts of financial support from the Federal Government to aid in their relocations into Petén . Though at first the Amerindian population was outraged at the thought, the absolutely huge amonts of money they were given quelled their anger. 10 pounds has been supplied to the many tribes to help in their relocation efforts. -------- |

Winter 1853 General Affairs The number of Rurales has increased drasticly over a short period of time, jumping from 2,000 to over 10,000 officers. The largest Department is located in Ensenada, where the current Governor-General Don Diego de la Vega has encouraged a large number of citizens to join the Rurales and help to completely stamp out corruption in their state. The construction of the Fortress System in Panama has almost come to it's start. All that remains is for the government to set aside the finances required for the task, estimated at 50 pounds. The Iguala Party has been gaining strength over the past few years, and many believe that come election time in 1854, the next President of Mexico could very well be a member of the party. -------- |

Winter The Winter Republic In Janurary of 1853, French Fillabusters led by Comte Gaston de Raousset-Boulbon siezed the city of Hermosillo in Sonora, taking captive the local Mexican Officals. They then proclaimed themselves the "Republic of Sonora." But just weeks later, Comte Gaston de Raousset-Boulbon and his followers left for home when the Comte came down with Dysentary. Though this event was seen as a rather humerous one, it was also seen that the city was left far to vulnerable. So the planing for a Stone Fortress on the outskirts of the city has began, but in the meantime 800 men are sent to act as a permanent garrison withen the city. They will be housed withen the newly constructed Rurales barracks, which has more then enough room to accomodate both the Rurales and Soldiers. -------- |

Spring 1852 The Would-be Dictator Following his retirement from the political life, Antonio López de Santa Anna moved into his large estate in Veracruz. But he would grow restless over the years, with the desire to once again hold power in the Nation. In November of 1852, he crafted a plan for a Coup d'état, which would place him in control of Mexico once again. In April of the following year, Santa Anna's plans came to materalize, and together will two of his closest friends he traveled to the headquaters of the First Army in San Juan de Ulúa Fortress. There he attempted to persuade General Félix María Zuloaga to hand over control of the Army to him, as "It was what is best for the Nation." But Zuloaga's alligance fell to Field Marshal Zaragoza, who he had served under during the Central American Wars. Zuloaga had Santa Anna and his companions arrested, and after a brief yet very public trail Santa Anna was sentenced to Life Imprisonment on the Petrel Islands Penal Colony. Ironicly, Francisco Morazán was already in attendance at the Petrel Penal Colony. As such, the Presidents from both sides in the Central American War would spend the rest of their days together, shoveling bird shit on the Petrel Islands. -------- |

Summer 1853 General Affairs The Spread of the Iguala Party withen the Army becomes incredibly visible with Colonel Negrete's visit to the 2nd Army. Both Field Marshal and Lt. General Ampudia held very long intellectual talks reguarding the need for a Monarch to rule over the Mexican People. Though Negrete was inherintly Conservative, he shared of the same views with the more liberal leaning Lt. General Ampudia. Though all three men agreed a Monarch was needed, the type of government Mexico would imploy following the return of a Monarch to Mexico was the main question they debated over the night. General José María Yáñez has been appointed as the Temporary Govenor-General of Sonora, and has begun his move into the region. Yáñez brings with him a personal military unit of some 200 men. The Construction of the Arredondo Army Base in Nicaragua has begun. The base will act as the Headquaters for the 2nd Army, and will be constructed north of Managua. --------- |

Spring 1853 Apache Wars 1853 ![]() Mangas Coloradas (Red Sleeves) In mid 1853, the Apache tribes in Northern Mexico began to launch raids against small Mexican towns. Many of the apaches were upset due to the Indian Act passed by the Mexican Congress, which was ment to deport the Amerindian peoples of Mexico into reservations. The Apache tribes are led by Red Sleeves. Red Sleeves was not only angered by the attempts at deporting his people into reservations, but also by the fact that his own brother had been killed by Mexican Soldiers who were attempting to forcibly send him to a reservation. In Spring of 1853, Red Sleeves along with some 200 Apache warriors began a series of raids against Mexican Mining towns in North Western Mexico. With all the recent activity in that region, President Urrea saw it fit to send the 2nd Regiment of the Jalisco Lancers to aid the local Rurales in putting a stop to the Apache menace. -------- 3ro Regimiento De la Caballería (2,500 men) Commanding Officer: Colonel Ramon Noel de Juarez y Sandisto Lieutenant Officer: Major Ricardo Inviernos 1st Battatlion - 835 - 6 Companies 2nd Battalion - 835 - 6 Companies 3rd Battalion - 830 - 6 Companies |

Summer 1853 Apache Wars 1853 ![]() Colonel Ramon Noel de Juarez y Sandisto The 3rd Cavalry Regiments arrival in the region was marked by bloodshed, as a scouting party sent ahead of the regiment to contact Hermosillo was ambushed by a large Apache raiding party. Of the 5 scouts in the party, only 2 made it back to the regiment alive, the rest were brutally slaughterd by the Apache warriors. But by the time Colonel Sandisto and his regiment arrived on the scene, the Apache were no where to be found, leaving the corpses of the scouts to rot in the sun. Seemingly undaunted by the ambush of his scouts, Colonel Sandisto calmy orderd the march to Hermosillo to continue. Upon reaching the city, Sandisto learned that the local garrison's numbers had been cut down considerably, losing nearly one third of their men due to a series of Apache raids. Sandisto was also informed that no runners sent to Guaymas had returned, and it was feared that Govenor-General Yáñez and his troops might have been slaughterd. Colonel Sandisto set out for Guaymas, leaving the 2nd Battalion in Hermosillo to aid the local garrison. And during the march to Guaymas the Reigment was attacked by a large war party, numbering at least 2,000 braves. The Battle lasted close to 30 minutes, with the Apaches being driven away after sustaining heavy casualites. The Regiment arrived in Guaymas to find Yáñez and his men preparing for a raid against a native village that has been supporting the Apache. -------- |

Autumn 1853 Apache Wars 1853 ![]() Mexican Soldiers attacking the Apache caravan A large group of Apache indians had gatherd some 20 miles outside of Guaymas, wiith numbers close to 4,000 Apache indians, it was the largest gathering of Indians in northern Mexico. They had gatherd to discuss what actions should be taken due to the Indian Act, and the Arrival of Red Sleeves. For years the indians had remained stoic in their nature, and with the tributes to the State growing smaller and smaller every year, many of them felt they had no reason to view Mexico as their soverign state. So they naturally felt that being required to relocate into other areas was not right, and that they must stand together against the Mexican Government. But not all of the Apache's were willing to fight, and a large caravan of Apache's began their trip to the south. But the caravan which consisted of mostly women and children, was "mistaken" for a hostile group by a patrol from Hermosillo. The Mexican Soldiers were already angered by the murders of Mexican women and children by Red Sleeves and his warriors, and so when they decended upon the caravan of Apache's, they killed all the men, and raped the women and some of the young girls. This act of barbarism by the Mexican Soldiers supred the rest of the Apaches into joining with Red Sleeves. A large force of around 1,500 apache warriors was spotted by Mexican Scouts, and the 3rd Regiment marched out to hopefully confront the threat. In the last days of November, the Apache Warriors and Mexican Soldiers engaged in the largest Battle of the Apache War of 1853. On the plains outside Nogales Colonel Sandisto and the 3rd Cavalry Regiment were attacked by 1,500 Apache Warriors. The battle lasted less then 20 minutes, with charges and counter charges by the Apache and Mexican Cavalrymen. Eventually the Mexican superior arms forced the Apache's too flee, but not before nearly 700 Apache Warriors had fallen, and some 200 more had been captured. The rest of the Apaches fled with Red Sleeves north into the American South West. -------- |

Summer 1854 The Little Frenchmen that Could ![]() Count Gaston de Raousset-Boulbon After his somewhat silly attempt to create his own nation our of Sonora in 1852, Count Gaston de Raousset-Boulbon returned to California, where he consolidated his mission in Sonora. His goals ended up closely matching those of the Mexican Government. In 1854, Boulbon arrived in Mexico City, and managed to attain a meeting with President Urrea. In the talks Boulbon outlined his plan to colonization the sparsely populated State of project in Sonora by bringing 6,000 emigrants from Upper California an Europe in six years; expenditures were under Government responsibility. Urrea, always a foreward thinker, was concerd by the chance that the Count de Boulbon would attempt yet again to secure independance. So precautionary measures were taken. First, Count Boulbon was forced to become a Mexican Citizen, with the stipulation he was allowed to keep his noble title and stature. Aswell the Garrison in Hermosillo aswell as the men under General Yáñez were to construct a Military Base inbetween Guymas and Hermosillo, to ensure and attempts at armed rebellion were quickly surpressed. After Count Gaston Raousset-Boulbon was sworn in as a citizen of Mexico, he was able to set off to accomplish his mission. --------- |

Summer 1854 William Walker Invades Baja California ![]() William Walker After having his attempts at Colonizing Sonora in the name of the United States ended with disaster, Colonel William Walker along with a group of 45 filibusters fled by ship, from US Authorities into Baja California. At first Walker and his group were seen flying the Mexican flag on their ship, but once they arrived in the port of La Paz, they almost immediatly changed their flag, and proclaimed themselves as the Republic of Lower California with William Walker are President. Three days later, Walker was forced to move to Cabo San Lucas, as the Mexican Garrisons in Baja California were seen marching on La Paz. Walker then attempted to establish the headquarters of his new government there. Walker brought with him a group of prisoners, mostly Rurales captured when he took La Paz. Amoung the prisoners was Colonel Juan Clímaco Rebolledo and Lieutenant Govenor Espinosa. After less then a week in Cabo San Lucas, Walker attempted to Flee once again, this time to Ensenada. But before he left the city he discoverd the Mexican forces had surrounded it, and his only chance of escape was by Sea. Walker at this point had lost the loyalty of many of his men, and when he told them they must sail to Sonora to set up a new Republic there, many of them refused and decieded to try and hide in the city. William walker and some 20 men took over a merchant vessel, and tried to sail from the city, but to their dismay the Mexican Pacific Squadron had arrived just after they began to sail away. The Mexican Squadron, at first though Walker and his men were just merchants as they were flying the Mexican Flag. But when the Mexicans came closer in order to warn them of the dangers in the city, Walker then commited a grave mistake when he decided to fire the ships cannons at the Mexican Squadron. Though initially suprised by the attack, the Mexican Squadron was undamaged by the inexperienced filibusters, and quickly returned fire, testing out the newly installed 8" Explosive Shell guns. The the Mexicans astonsihment, the explosive shells instantly tore apart the ship, leaving no survivors. --------- |

Summer 1854 Activity along Mexican-Colombian Boarder ![]() Checkpoint guards stopping a supposed Colombian Buissinessmen Due to recent filibuster invasions in North Western Mexico, the Mexican Army has setup a large line of Checkpoints along the Mexican-Colombian Boarder. The checkpoints, though small, have turned up an incredible ammount of smugglers coming from Colombia pretending to be harmless buissinessmen. Just over a month after the start of the checkpoints, some 100 Colombian smugglers have been detained, along with some 15 or more colombian smugglers killed as they attempted to flee from the Checkpoint Guards. As of yet no sentancing has been passed upon the Colombian Smugglers, as it appears President Urrea wishes to try and comprimise with the Colombians to end this bad situation. These arrests go to push the construction effort of the Fortification System along the Colombian Boarder even closer to beggining. 20 pounds have been put foward to fund the construction of the first two forts. --------- |

Summer 1854 Military Affairs ![]() Mexican Soldiers preparing to fire upon the Filibusters The last of the filibusters in Cabo San Lucas were flushed out of the city by the Mexican Military. The filibusters attempted to flee from the city thinking the bulk of the mexicans were already inside, but to their horror outside of Cabo San Lucas waited a long line of Mexican Regulars. The Filibusters seeing no other choice attempted to charge the lines of the Mexicans, but after being shot to pieces, those who had been lucky enough not to have been shot and killed surrenderd to the Mexicans. Arredondo Army Base has been completed and is now acts as the headquaters for the 2nd Army. Inlight of the awesome success of the Explosive Shells guns in destroying the ship carrying the Filibuster William Walker, the Ministry of War has seen fit to outfit all costal forts and port cities with Explosive Shell firing guns. The completion of this refitting process is scheduled to be completed withen two years. --------- |
