Kei watched the man intently as he created fire. She could not understand how he could so easily light the timber. There had been many times she tried to do the same exact thin but to no avail. It was just not fair. Kei hated to rely on anyone for anything. Sitting opposite of the man, Kei was mesmerized by the fire. The heat tingled her skin and she backed away a little. Thoughts of home flooded her mind and she began to grow homesick. Everyone would be missing her. Perhaps they would send someone for her. Most definitely they would. It was a matter of keeping ahead of them. Kei could have made conversation with the man. They would be stuck with each other for a while. She simply did not know what to say to him. What did they even have in common? He was obviously human and she...well, half counted didn't it? How did you explain to someone what she was? The legend was simply that, a legend. It would have been silly of her. Kei sighed and looked up to the clear night sky. She wished she was out there, anywhere. |

Ray warmed himself by the fire for a while before breaking the silence. "Any idea how much longer until we reach civilization?" he asked, only mildly interested in the answer. His tone suggested that he could just have easily have been asking about the weather. He might have, except that they were in a desert and he felt that would be pointless. There were other questions he wanted to ask, but they could wait until they knew each other better. ~Patience and persistance.~ thought Ray. That motto had served him well in the past, both with women and in life. |

Kei's attention snapped back to reality when Ray spoke. She had almost forgotten where she was. That was not good. The man seemed rather bored, which was completely understandable in their given circumstances. "Well, I've never really traveled across the desert before. Based on the stories I have been told we have yet to reach the most treacherous parts," Kei was beginning to scare herself. Even with her abilities they would have trouble. Kei poked the fire with a small, half burnt piece of kindling. "At the least a few weeks if we can't find some sort of transportation. If we survive." Kei did not want to sound to gloomy but it was the truth. They did not travel fast on foot and in the heat. Kei looked up to Ray through the fire. "Are you in a hurry?" Kei's suspicious self ever present asked such a question. She had let her guard down for the moment before and had to appear to have not. |

Ray listened as Kei spoke, it seemed as though they still had a ways to go before reaching civilization. "Not really, I was mostly making conversation. Although the sand in my pants is starting to chafe." replied Ray, with a smile. Ray wasn't actually bothered too much by the sand; he just wished there was less of it. It was more the things that the sand hid that bothered him. "What do you know about the creatures that live out here?" he asked, his voice becoming serious. Any information on the dangers they faced would help him prepare. Although, if she didn't know anything he could always fly by the seat of his pants as he always did. However, there was no guarantee of survival that way. |

Kei smiled at the thought of sand burn on his behind. That was definitely a part of traveling through the desert. Still, she could manage something for them to sit on. Concentrating for a moment on the sand next to Ray, some thick, soft moss grew rapidly into a rectangular patch. Kei had to show of just a little and had one end grow slightly higher than the rest for Ray to rest his head when he wanted to sleep. She proceeded to do the same for herself as Ray continued to speak. "The poisonous ones come out after dark. As well the creatures that want to feed on your life source and then keep your soul as their pet," Kei could only reiterate the stories she had heard from the elders. Fact being she had never traveled in the desert after sundown. Kei had always returned to the republic before night fell. "They fly at night too. During the day it is mostly desert. The scorpions farther into the desert are deadlier. I don't know why, it just seems like only the ones that survive such conditions are monsters themselves." Kei layed down onto the soft moss. Still mesmerized by the fire, kei's eyes grew heavy but she did not want to let her guard down. She would have to however. |

Ray nodded, it looked like traveling during the day was their best option. It was hot and dry, but at least they wouldn't have to fight poisonous, soul stealing monsters. Noticing the soft patches of moss, Ray smiled slightly. This woman seemed to like showing off. Of course he wasn't in any position to judge her, since he was the same way. "I don't know about you," he said after a while, "but I'm gonna call it a night." With that Ray leaned back on the moss, made himself comfortable, closed his eyes and waited for sleep to come. |

By the time Ray had declared his retirement for the night, Kei was fast asleep. She was much more exhausted than she had realized. Then again this really was the first journey out side of the republic she had ever been on. Usually she was home by sundown. At least she was helping somebody. That would be her excuse when eventually caught. It was only a matter of time. Her dreams reflected her anxiety and she stirred in her sleep. The worst was what she couldn't see. There was somebody there, but they were covered by shadow. Kei could feel the threat though. Something was just wrong about the situation. Struggling to wake up, she could not force herself awake. Inside she was screaming. Suffocating. If only the warm sunshine outside could penetrate the darkness tormenting her. |

Ray slept peacefully through the night and awoke as the first rays of light shone through to their little oasis. The fire had burnt itself out and was now nothing more than a pile of ashes. Ray spent some time checking his belongings and testing the sharpness of his blade. He then took his sword and began practicing his stances and shadow fighting. He swung, dodged and countered an imaginary foe. He did this whenever he got time in order to help keep his senses sharp and his body limber. |

Kei took a deep breath that woke her. Still, her eyes opened to a clear blue sky above her. Grateful to be awake, she could hear movement beside her. Looking out of the corner of her eyes, Kei watched Ray sword play. She didn't want him to know she was awake just yet. The unknown observation would give her a chance to size him up more. Get to know what he does when he thinks no one is watching. No facade. |

Ray finished his exercise with some crunches and push ups before cooling down with some stretches. He then returned to the moss where he had slept, sat down and crossed his legs. Closing his eyes, he began to breathe slowly. He tried clearing his mind by focusing on his breathing. It was an old trick his teacher had taught him. Supposedly it helped relax the mind and body while keeping the senses alert, thus giving the practicioner a slight edge. Ray gave up within ten minutes. He just couldn't seem to clear his mind or focus. His lips twitched upward in a smile as he remembered his teacher scolding him. Finally, he looked over towards Kei. "Hey, you awake? We should probably get going." |
