The creature watched Victoria, keep a wary eye on those around her and this man she was aproaching. Even so the creature still thumbed through a few articles of clothing. Finally a pair of thick wool pants were selected, a drab burlap shirt, and a long leather coat which perhaps resembled too closely to what highwayman tended to wear while on the road. It then began to glance over the footwear. Something of vague memory passed its thoughts. Those who worked the ships didn't wear boots. If the deck got wet boots would not grip and they would fall. Still, it picked a pair of shin-high boots and turned its attention back to Victoria. It would need her approval, its knowledge of clothing not entirely whole from what it could manage to make of these recollections. Its eyes quickly went to the man though. Full of threat though the creature itself was unaware of any such thing. Despite the fact that it stood upright the creature's body language made it seem like it was ready to spring without warning, and in truth it was. If any hint of harm was directed towards Victoria it would be on the offensive. |

"Ah," he said, caught nearly off-guard by the woman's indifferent charity. "Thank you, but I think I can afford it." This is not the first time someone saw him and thought he was a commoner or street-rat, although it hadn't happened for a long time. He checked his wallet to pay the man for some clothes. It was a somewhat old dark green shirt he plucked, a little dirty, but with it's long sleeves, it was sure to clothe and warm him properly, as would a pair of baggy hemp pants and a slightly tattered fur belt he eyed. But, after quick inspection, he knew he didn't have enough money. So, he weighed the possibilities: He could either take this woman's offering, and risk having everyone in the vicinity think he's some street urchin, or stay cold, and possibly get the flu which could put a hold on his tutoring career. He chose free clothing. "I... can't afford them. Okay, Violet, I thankfully accept your offer. Perhaps, in.." He stopped his offer to teach her when his eyes found the creature accompanying her. He could sense something hostile in it's gaze. Mayhaps it did not see in a poor tutor whatever the girl did. But, it was rude to stare. "Umm..." Ren was actually frightened. It looked like whatever the creature was, it could easily kill Ren. He forgot to even finish his sentence, as he waited nervously for his clothing to be paid for. |

Victoria smiled and nodded politely when he informed her of his monetary possession. At least he would be able to have the damp clothing removed and replaced. She was about to take a step back when he spoke again, mistaken about the amount of money he had. She could help him after all. Even within all of the wretchedness of the port, Victoria could do some good. It was strange to hear him call her Violet, but desperate times... Victoria noticed his eyes wander beside her and stop along with his words. Turning her head to look at whatever the man had seen, Victoria saw the creature watching them. In his hands he held some boots and Victoria smiled. That was actually a good idea. She hadn't been wearing anything proper on her feet. She turned back to the man and waved her hand nonchalantly. "That's just..." Victoria couldn't name him or even think of a fake name, "my traveling companion." Victoria didn't want him to become too riled up if he wasn't intending on hurting her. Reaching up the sleeve of her gown, Victoria removed some leaves that were stitched in loosely. Facing the shopkeep, she handed him the leaves. "This should cover whatever this man, myself and him there," she nodded to the creature, "purchase." In fact she had overpaid the man and he was eager to overlook it. With a nod, he moved to watch his wares. Returning to the defaced man, she clasped her hands together. "If you plan on finding a place to make your home, Ombra Di Notta is a fine city. You will surely prosper there in whatever trade you choose. I have just come from there but sometimes you must travel, I'm sure you well know." Victoria smiled and turned to find some shoes for herself as well. She did not want to bother the man anymore than she had already if he just wanted to be on his way. |

The creature watched warily. Its gaze not faultering even when the man had noticed it. Determining that this man was of no immediate threat the creature moved closer as Victoria paid the clerk. Having no concept of the value it couldn't quite comprehend how the small things Victoria had placed in the clerks hands were of any equivalent value. Yet its place was not to understand these things. It had heard the majority of the conversation as well, more clearly the last few sentences from both Victoria and the stranger. Its now shifted its gaze more casually, though a wary eye did travel back to the soaked man almost nonchalantly. "I did not know people swam while clothed." to most it may seem sarcastic but the creature was making an observation. Though it had yet to see anyone swim, there were a reference or two to the action in the great novel he had helped re-assemble and none were done by any people in casual garbs. |

It was strange to Ren, watching her pay the man. Being a traveler, he assumed he recognized most if not all currency used for hundreds of miles. But this was new, and it shocked him, made him feel as if the world around him had changed before his eyes. Surely time had not left him behind, had it? More shocking was the fact that he only vaguely remembered seeing a dock like this, but the mental images were still very different. The woman mentioned Ombra Di Notta, and Ren drew a complete blank. Something was really wrong, but... Ren hid his fear. Even the lowest common denominators shambling about the market would think him crazy if he'd announced X years passed by without him. He wasn't exactly confident in his reply. "Ombra Di Notta? Where is that?" When he finished, he caught the last half of what the creature said. Ren never could take sarcasm, however unintended this instance was. Without even looking, he rebutted. "I did not know large ugly things wore human clothes." He cupped the clothing and stared at Victoria, waiting for the woman's directions. |

Victoria narrowed her eyes in bewilderment and waved her arms as she spoke. "You've never heard of Ombra Di Notta? It's the capital of this continent. One of the most prosperous and peaceful kingdoms in the world. You just follow...," Victoria's wonder of the man's lack of knowledge of Ombra Di Notta was distracted when the creature spoke. She hadn't stopped to think why the man would have swam clothed. It was an acute observation. She drew conclusions that he must have needed to escape something. Then the man fired back with hostility. Victoria stepped aside to be able to look from one to the other on either side of her. Things were starting to get a little tense. The desire to cut the man down to size with words for insulting the creature flared up. Victoria clenched her teeth and fists. The imbalance within her was just too much and she lost control. "Listen you disfigured freak, he was only stating an observation because you might be a lying sack of excrement. Obviously he was right if you got so defensive about the topic," Victoria pointed as she ranted, "As for large and ugly, I think you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground. He's more man than you'll ever be," At that point, Victoria lowered her hand to her mouth and stared wide eyed. She did not know where that outburst had come from. It was not like her to act in such a manner. Especially to a complete stranger she had just tried to help. Where were her manners? She was a royal figure after all, she had a reputation to keep. Then Victoria remembered that she was not in the city and in fact was hiding such information. She glanced at the creature and shrugged. It was quite an embarassing moment. OOC: No offense here Ren, Vic's been a little crazy recently...LOL |

The creature listened to the man's insult in quiet observation. The hostility noted but the insult not exactly taken as it should be, "That is true, not many like myself here....though I did think I looked remarkably similar to hu...." if the creature had a slightly bewildered look on its face before it now looked lost as Victoria erupted in anger. The creature to a hesitent step back, last time it was Victoria like this was just before her bodyguard had sunk her blades into its back. "Um.." the creature was at a loss of words. Looking to the man it fumbled over thoughts and conversations as it searched for a way to sweep this under the rug, so to say. "Excuse her please, I was making observations and she does not take kindly to rudeness." those words taken almost entirely out of the book, though present tense added and two references made into one sentence though they had been pages apart and about two different people in different timelines, "I meant no offense." |

In hasty embarrassment, Victoria pointed to the road that led to the city. "That way, Ombra Di Notta is just up the road. I am really very sorry," Victoria scooped up a pair of shoes, took the creature by the arm and led him away quickly towards the docks. She had made enough of a scene. He could not find out who she was. That was imperative. The disgrace was enough but to make another enemy could prove fatal. Hopefully they could get lost in the crowd. Sure she had not found a trunk but all was not lost. There had to be a crate by the dock they could purchase. It might smell like fish or another putrid odor, but it would keep their belongings safe for the time being. As well they would need to find a place to change out of their clothing. Victoria found herself even more out of place the longer they traveled. She was embarrassed to be dressed in such fine attire while everyone else were in stitches and rags. OOC: sorry it's so short, I don't want to auto the creature. |

The creature was a bit surprised at the haste of which Victoria dragged them out of the store and proceeded on their way. The look it gave the scholar as they were leaving was that of a confused, almost lost, person who obviously had little idea what was going on. As they continued on and their quick pace slowed the creature became aware that they weren't moving with any particular destination in mind. Well atleast it did not seem like it at that moment. "What are we looking for?" it asked as it turned its eyes to survey their new surroundings. The people here were a good deal less well dressed than those in the inner-parts of the city. Though it recognized this it didn't address it. They were of little to no importance to it and for that reason unless it suddenly affected it or Victoria the creature would dismiss any differences. |

Victoria looked side to side in search of a chest to keep their items. The crowd began to thicken a little as they neared a ship letting its passengers dock. A few bumped shoulders as they passed. "Something to put our clothes in. A crate or..." Victoria's words broke off as she squeezed herself to the creature's arm to keep herself standing. Her other hand held her abdomen and she breathed heavily. The pain was excruciating. Clenching her jaw, Victoria held back as best she could but a small whimper escaped her. Tears welled but did not fall momentarily. Then came the hunger. Victoria felt her mouth water and every being around them teased her. Her grip on the creature relaxed and she slowly stood upright. Her breathing was still rapid and shallow but she could walk. Victoria knew the time would come where she could not resist the famishment. As well, deep inside she knew it was hurting her to not eat. Victoria thought about the rats on the ship. Those she could drain without cause for alarm. The cats would be blamed for their disappearance. The ship would be better off as well. Everybody benefited from that situation even though the taste was less than desirable. She could not remain among the mass for much longer. |
