Whom or what is responsible? Panic has stricken the globe. Will civilization collapse? What will emerge from the reset? Only time will tell. To each citizen of Aronia from the Global Gazette, we wish all luck.

Misery nodded to Asher, "Thank you."

She glanced at Sirius when Asher asked her about him. "Hmm. Well, he seems like a nice guy. We can stay here for tonight, and if you dont like it here we can leave tomorrow, okay?" Misery said with a smile.

She could tell there was some tension between the two. Asher didnt seem very happy when she was around Sirius. She gave a sigh then, not realizing she did so. Could she have any more problems?

Sirius finished with the dishes and suddenly took Misery's hand and lifted her from the chair. "Come, come! I shall show you my castle." Sirius exclaimed, leading every on.

"Thats alright with me. And I'm sorry..."

He added the last, seeing her sigh

"I'm not trying to put anything else on your shoulders. It's between me and him right now, okay?"

He smiled to her a little bit, then he looked over to Sirus as the man swooped in and pulled her up again. Asher had already decided that even if Misery wasn't here, he was not going to like this guy - he just plain bugged him. He didn't like how he was so over the top about everything, he thought the idea of having a place this big to oneself was preposterous, and he certainly didn't like how he pulled Misery around like she was a doll, or a child, or whatever way you wanted to put it - he just dragged her along, and Asher couldn't not follow... after all he'd promised to stay with her. So he stood again, and walked after them, still thinking - now partially about how to get out of this situation. He was having a hard enough time explaining to Misery how he felt, and this son of a bitch had to come and make things more complicated yet?

Asher was fine with complications. Hell, he liked them. If they were math related, or involved a device of some kind. He absolutely hated complications of this kind, there was absolutely no logical path to take to solve them. He couldn't substitute any variables and integrate, or anything like that... maybe that was why he never got as close to people as he had with her. They were a problem that he couldn't solve, and he hated that... but her, he wanted so much to try, and even if he never could, he thought he would be okay with that. It didn't sound particularly romantic if he were to say it like that, but for him, that meant a great deal. He'd spoken so confidently to Sirus, and he believed every word he said, but seeing everything so far...

Sirius took the two around the castle and showed them all his stuff. He had so much that it took a long while. Misery wasent too bored, and a lot of his things were very fascinating and interesting. He glanced at one of the many clocks he had and smiled, "Ah, its getting late! I hope I didnt bore you two too much."

Misery shook her head, "No not really. A lot of your things were very neat, and you castle is very beautiful." Sirius suddenly pulled Misery close and lifted her chin, making her turn red, "It makes my heart swell with joy to hear you say that." He said seriously with a smile.

Misery couldnt help but be absorbed into his deep blue eyes. Sirius glanced at Asher and moved away from Misery. "Forgive me, showing such affections in front of others is rude. I hope I didnt embarrass you, Misery."

Misery said nothing, just kind of stood there like a statue. This was all new to her and it was a bit much at the moment. Seeing this, Sirius smiled, "Why dont you go relax in the tub?" He said, gesturing in the direction of the large bathroom. "Dont worry about me and Asher, we promise to behave and act like civilized men in your absence."

Misery looked towards Asher, then back to Sirius and nodded. She headed off by herself then and Sirius turned to Asher, "Come. I think we need to talk." Sirius moved off leading Asher to a small office where Sirius did most of his work. He poured them some tea and then gestured for Asher to sit and did so himself.

"Something is disturbing me. Every since I approached you two, I noticed there has been something odd going on. You see, I am not sure if you are aware, but there is someone watching the both of you. She has the same abilities as myself, but arent nearly as developed, but are still pretty advanced." He paused, watching Asher's expression and taking a sip of his tea. "I have cut her off for now and will continue to do so until you leave. I think it is rather rude to spy on people like that. She has spoken to me and I find her to be a foul sluttish woman...nothing like our beloved Misery. However, I do not care to repeat what she said." With that, Sirius looked into his tea with disgust and set it aside, no longer wanting to drink it. "Do you know of whom I speak of?"

___

Misery retrieved her clothes and headed off to the bathroom. She was glad that she was alone for now. She shut the door behind her. She blinked at the scale of the bathroom and sweat dropped. "Wow. This place is a bit much, isnt it?" She said aloud to herself.

She ran her bathwater and found some oils and things too. "Ooh..." She said smelling one. "Well....I doubt a chance like this is going to come around again...." She then poured a little of the oil in the large tub and let the scent fill the room. She climbed in after stripping and sighed. "This feels nice." Misery closed her eyes, then blushed suddenly when she pictured Sirius' face in her mind and shook her head. "No! Just me. This is me time....just going to relax and think of nothing. Thinking of nothing...."

Asher nodded a little bit, his cheeks red more with irritation than anything else at this point, but he nodded to Misery.

"Yeah, go take a break. I know I've kicked the other two men we've run into but I promise I won't kick Sirus."

As she walked away he looked over to Sirus and smiled slightly.

"Believe me, they deserved it. I'm still waiting for you to hit that point."

He followed the man, though, and sat down on the other side of the desk, closing his eyes and listening, not saying anything while the other man spoke except to laugh at one thing.

"Slut? Got that right."

He didn't touch the tea, though he did look back over at the other man, his emerald eyes almost deadly sharp.

"Yeah. She's been spying on us for over two days now. Not sure what she wants out of us but I think she's after Misery as well."

He looked up at the ceiling for a time, then he sighed heavily, and sat forward, leaning his elbows on the desk.

"Well, I've told you that much... and as long as you're trying to win her heart I don't suppose you'll pull anything, no matter how much I'd rather be with her somewhere else... now where to start... I am very smart."

He looked at Sirus still, deadly serious.

"I have four Ph.Ds, eight Master's degrees, and frankly I gave up at that point because I was sick of school. My degrees are in theoretical physics, quantum dynamics, mathematics, and electrical engineering, my other degrees are all over, biomechanics to computer science. I'm the smartest person at the Academy by far, because half those dumbasses couldn't solve for a Calabi-Yau dimensional flux to save their lives. I'm not telling you this to boast, I'm telling you this because I want you to understand that I'm qualified to say everything I'm about to. That car you saw is ten years ahead of current automotive tech, and Misery can tell you about my lab, which is a good fifty years easy ahead of that crap at Centrum... now here's the point of all this..."

He looked down for a moment, trying to think of how to put it, then he looked back up to Sirus.

"Misery is not human. And yes, I know you aren't either and that there are all sorts of nohuman sentient races on this planet, but that's not the point at all. She doesn't have a mother. Or a biological father. Misery wasn't born from intercourse, she was born from a lab... and the practical part of all this is that she's at least three hundred years ahead of any of our current technology. I'm not saying she's a machine, shes the furthest thing from it - she loves and fears and feels everything, I've seen her, and if anyone doesnt buy THAT I have the MRI data to prove it, so they can go to hell. She doesn't have a single piece of machinery in her larger than any of the machinery in a human cell, she's entirely composed of nanomachines, she has cells just like us, but artificially produced. Even so, they live and reproduce just like anyones, but faster - you should see how quickly she heals... that's the point, though. Give me a few months and I could make a robot that you'd hardly be able to tell from her visually, all the actions, her voice, all of that - but it wouldn't feel, it wouldn't heal its cuts, think for itself... it wouldn't be a person. Misery is. I'd chalk it up to brain structure but I don't buy that, so I'll just say... when it comes to electronics and technology I'm the best there is, and I can barely comprehend the tech that was used to create her... I just want to keep her safe, help her figure out who and what she is, maybe even find the world the man that built her came from... but someone wants her for something else. The man left a letter, for me, I dont know how he knew, but he said Misery holds a key. A key to what I don't know, but these other people found out and they want it. That woman is one of them. The other one is a man in a black coat, his name is Lahziel, he somehow wiped her memory and had been holding her for the past month, after he poisoned and killed her real father... I shot him but I don't think he's dead, even though I have no idea how he survived... we've been on the run since then. Got attacked in our sleep last night, thats why we were in the forest, hiding. How's that for a story?"

Sirius looked at Asher as he spoke. Not human? I suppose that is why the glimpse of her mind was something I had never seen before…. Sirius also couldnt help but be impressed by Asher's list of accomplishments. Most of the men like him were full of themselves because they knew everything, but Asher seemed very down to earth and normal.

"Lahziel...." Sirius said aloud, "A man not to be trifled with. It is unfortunate that you had to get mixed up in one of his diabolical plans for the future." With a sigh, Sirius continued, "I know Lahziel because we once tried to do business. He wanted something of mine that I refused to sell. A few days later it was stolen and I have no doubt he is the one that had stolen it." He looked around the room, wondering if he had a picture of it. "It was a very interesting object. I believe it was a shield. It looked remarkable similar to Misery's wings, actually."

He went to a filing cabinet and sifted through some paper and pulled out a picture. "I keep detailed records on every single object I have in my castle." Sirius placed the picture on the desk in front of Asher. It was the same shield Lahziel had used to block Asher's beam with.

He sat back down then, “Anyway, as for the woman…well, you wont have any more problems with her while you are under my roof. You can sleep easy knowing that much. Still, I think I might have pissed her off by blocking her…and by also saying things that I now know to be rude, so I am a little worried of what she will do to you when you two leave here.”

Misery finished her bath after soaking for a long time. She got out and dried off and dressed. When she was standing in front of the mirror, buttoning up the front of her pajamas she caught a glimpse of something in the mirror. She whirled, but saw nothing. “Hello? Is there anyone there?” She called out.

Sirius suddenly stood, knocking over his tea. “Someone has intruded upon my dwelling.” He hissed. “I am not sure how that got passed my mental block, but they have.” She headed for the door then and flung it open, “Hurry, Asher. They are in the bathroom with Misery!” Sirius said, dashing down the hall.

Misery suddenly felt breathing on the back of her neck and blushed when she felt hands grope her, then run down her body. “DON’T TOUCH ME!” She yelled, leaping away and turning to see a very skinny man smiling at her. “Your soft delicate skin looks so delicious….” He said in a raspy voice and began to approach her, “You are worth a lot of money, do you know that girlie…? After watching you bathe, I can see why.”

Misery’s eyes went wide and she hugged herself. She suddenly felt so dirty and violated. “Stay away from me you creep!”

“I cant do that.” He replied. I have to collect my reward money and the only way to do that is return you to him. He lunged then and Misery took a step back. Her eyes suddenly narrowed and her stance changed. In a flash, she moved. Six degrees to the left…downwards….increase force….. She thought as she moved, perfectly recreating Asher move from the night before.

When the door burst open and Sirius appeared, the man was just stumbling backwards, holding his broken ribs. Misery glared at the man and then said, “Called the one inch punch, asswipe..."

"That thing!? I wondered where he'd gotten it... don't worry, it's useless now, I'm almost certain. He used it to block a point blank shot from another little invention of mine... back from a darker period of my inventing years."

He didn't offer any more explaination than that, though, he was still curious as to where the shield had come from... it looked exactly like one of Gerald's inventions... but if it was, why would Sirus have it...? Then again it did sort of support his theory that the old man had been even older than any of them thought. Suddenly, though, his face paled, and before Sirus had stood, he had already knocked over his chair and bolted out the door, sprinting down the hallway. He ran into Misery's room, yelling.

"Misery!!?"

He banged once on the door, but it was locked, so he ran for the window, shoved it open, and swung around the pillar, flying through the window the man had come in, and landing just in time to see the man stumbling back, obviously badly hurt. He looked worried for a moment, then when she said what she said, he laughed.

"Try the kick!"

He saw Sirus come in, obviously worried, but he wasn't anymore - the man wasn't recovering from that, he would have too many broken ribs to be fighting, and even if he could, Asher was already walking around to stay close to Misery, looking very decidedly pleased - she was a FAST learner, that was for sure...

Sirius suddenly grabbed the man as he stumbled backwards and began to take him away. He looked deadly serious for once, and that seemed to make him even more handsome. "Stay with Misery. I will deal with him." Sirius said, though he probably didnt need to tell Asher to stay with Misery.

Sirius disappeared, dragging the badly broken man behind him. Sirius took him down to the dungeon and made sure he had no sort of tracking device or the like on him, then got down to business. "You are a despicable man." Sirius said, frowning after he entered the mans mind to see who had send him. It was there he discovered what the man had done to Misery. "How dare you enter a ladies bathing chambers without permission, much less touch her."

The man smiled, blooding running from the corner of his mouth. "She looked delicious.... Do you know what I was about to do to her b-" Sirius suddenly grabbed the mans face with his hand and squeezed his temples. "I know what you were going to do. I invaded your mind. I know what you are going to say before you even say it." Sirius pulled the mans head forward, and then slammed it against the stone wall.

"You are going to suffer down here." Sirius said with a sadistic smile. "When they are gone, I will let you rot in your broken body until you die. I will torture you for even LOOKING at her!"

____

Misery slumped when Sirius and the man vanished down the hall. She hugged herself, feeling suddenly cold. "He was a filthy man!" She finally exclaimed. "That bastard touched me....watched me...."

Asher nodded slightly as the man stormed out, then he pressed a hand to his head, and his eyes widened just slightly in something more akin to horror than anything else. So... Sirus had more than a touch of a dark side... would he ever act like that towards Misery...? He didn't think so, but...

"Hey..."

He walked over to her and pulled off his coat, then he put it around her shoulders and sat next to her, putting an arm around her shoulders too.

"It's alright, Misery... you sure as hell got him back, didn't you? You can relax now, you're safe..."

He hugged her a little bit, looking off towards the window. Apparently this place was less secure than he had thought, but still... how had that man gotten in? If Sirus was being truthful about blocking the woman, how were they following them? Had he planted something on Misery, perhaps? Or was Sirus not as pleasant as he seemed...?

Sirius returned a little while later. He stood in the doorway, watching the two for a moment then entered, "Ah, I think thats enough excitement for tonight. Why dont we all get a bite to eat and then turn in?"

Misery shook her head, "I am not hungry..." Sirius started slightly then sighed, "Misery...." He looked a little worried and reached his hand out to her slightly then stopped. "Alright then. Would you like me to show you to your room? I assure you that no one else will dare get past me. That is a promise." Sirius voice was firm and confident, so it was obvious he was going to keep his word. "But, that still doesent excuse me for letting it happen in the first place. I am sorry....its my fault."

Misery said nothing, only stared at the floor. Sirius' face looked saddened then and he sighed, "Alright. Well, if you two want something to eat, you know where the kitchen is. Goodnight."

He left then and after a moment, Misery gathered her things and headed out of the bathroom too. At least she was dressed when both of them entered. Misery opened the door to her room and it suddenly seemed very large and very cold. She felt like their was someone hiding behind every object, watching her.

She stepped back, overly paranoid now and dropped her things. She Dashed down the hallway, looking for Asher and when she found him she latched onto her arm. "Everyone is watching me." She said quietly. "I dont want them too...." She closed her eyes and buried her face in his arm then.

Asher nodded.

"Yeah, come on Misery... up off this cold floor, okay?"

He smiled softly and pulled her up gently, walking very close to Misery the whole time. He wasn't worried about Sirus anymore, he was just worried about her... she seemed so shattered... he let her leave then, and he waved a farewell to Sirus, then he walked back to his room and sat down, pulling his pad out and turning it on.

"Why build a synthetic organism that can feel so much pain... you could have just made her happy, Gerald... and you knew what would happen when you put that key in her... why put her through all the pain...?"

He shook his head a little, then he was just doing more of the usual when she burst in, and he looked up in surprise.

"Misery?"

He watched as she latched onto him, and his eyes softened as he put the pad down, shutting it off.

"Sweetie... come on, I'll take you back to your room, okay? Sirus is right, you should get treated like a princess at least once in a while. I won't leave the room though, okay? I'll stay close, I'll even hold your hand, you don't have to worry..."

He took one of her hands in his, and he smiled, looking for her eyes.

"I'll stick with you, like I promised... okay?"
