"ah!" He felt her in him, somehow, and then that... presence moved into his mind. he recoiled at first, terrified - it felt like he was naked, she could see everything there... but... he relaxed slowly, and held her body closer. What was there of him she didnt already know...? Fear, perhaps...? Scraps of memories not important enough to say anything about... had it been anyone but her, he surely would have lost it, but... How different was this, really? <Going to have to warn me next time you pull this... scared the living hell out of me...> he had to try very hard to make those thoughts distinct in his mind, so that she could hear, and he nodded a little bit. When she finally receeded... it was oddly like losing something... maybe it was just that she was so much a part of him, to have her actually there for those few moments... weird... He smiled softly, then helped her to her feet and jumped down off the building, holding his arms out to catch her. "Agreed. I wont have you in pain anymore... for now though, it's been a full day." She knew he wouldnt drop her... and vice versa. That was why they were so close... |

His words in her brain were odd. Or rather, the sensation of them there was odd. She figured it had been just as weird for him when she'd spoken to him that way. Watching him jump to ground after helping her up, she didn't even think twice about what she was about to do. She stepped off the ledge and let herself fall. Spinning slightly in the air, she now watched the blue sky get farther and farther away. It saddened her. She had loved every second of her time in air. It had felt so free up there. Why had she left? The tendril wrapped around her mind pulsed and she remembered. She was almost to the ground now, but she wasn't worried. Drake was there to catch her; he always had been. Just like he'd promised. She smiled and closed her eyes right before she reached him. |

he watched her falling as if in slow motion, spinning like a top as she fell, and then she was in his arms. he had to bend down a little to absorb the impact, and he spun her around a little, smiling. "Nice catch?" He laughed, then kissed her cheek and let her down before walking off towards the nearest duct entrance and lifting the cover. He looked down into the darkness, and then back up to her, trying to keep that smile on his face. he was remembering though... this was the duct they hardly ever used. Didnt come so close to her old home very often, and they never stayed... the last time he had descended into this darkness... it had changed his life forever. Was their life going to change...? It would be fine if it it changed for both of them... but would either of them live if the fates pulled them apart? He didnt want to think about it... he never had, and never did... "Off into the black again, huh...?" |

She bit her lip as she fell into his arms. Her back would always cause her pain, but now it hurt more due to her fall. Sucking in a breath, she smiled and stood, receiving a kiss on the cheek from Drake. "Marvelous," she chuckled, making her way over to the aqueduct entrance he was now holding open for her. Looking down into the inky blackness, she was unsure how to feel. She sensed Drake's uncertainty and it bugged her. Why was he so nervous about going down here? Hopping down, she waited for him instead of heading off in hopes of beating him home as she normally did. But then, today wasn't a normal day. Once Drake was in the aqueduct with her and the lid was shut, she grabbed his hand and squeezed it reassuringly as they headed off down the tunnel. She couldn't wait to get home so she could unravel the tendril around her mind. It was still pulsing and still annoying, but at least it wasn't burning. Finally, she spoke up. "I'm sorry about that up there," she said, her voice low so that it would not travel through out the tunnel system. "I just... I didn't know what to do... God, it burned." She could still feel the burning if she thought about it, so she stopped thinking and wrapped another tendril around her mind. "I didn't mean to scare you. Or hurt you. It wasn't painful, was it?" She bit her lip, worried now that she might have hurt him. He was her only friend, the only person she had in this world now, and she didn't want to lose him because of this. |

He squeezed her hand back, and followed her, also not worried about who made it back first. When they were sitting again, though, and he had drank some water, tired from the running, he laid back and was going to sleep when he heard her speak, and sat back up, shaking his head, then he took her hand and held it, looking at their hands there for a few moments. "No, it didnt hurt me at all... was just the strangest feeling, i guess. Maybe because I always thought the two of us couldnt get any closer than we were, and here this comes out of the blue." he looked up at her and smiled. "If it saved you from the pain then I'm glad you did it... can hide in my head whenever you want.. though...." He laughed. "Not sure how safe it really is in there." |

A cloth, dipped in the clean water, served her purposes nicely. She spoke as she worked, first cleaning off the cuts and scrapes visible while still clothed. When he spoke up after her, she smiled, relieved it hadn't hurt him. For the first time, a light blush crept onto her cheeks as she looked down at their hands. "Yeah. I suppose so..." she said, trying to keep her voice from cracking. Clearing her throat, she smiled again and, retracting her hand slowly, stood. She moved across the room, back to the clean water, and filled the large, metal bucket there with some water. Levitating it back over to the wash area, she took one last look at Drake before moving behind the cloth they'd put up years ago for bathing privacy. "Well, I think your mind is safer than some people's," she argued with a small chuckle as she removed her now torn and dirty clothes. "Damn," she hissed as the cool wetcloth rubbed gently over her back. The fall had made a few new small scrapes there, as well as re-opening her old scars. "Do we have anymore thread?" she called out, trying to change the subject. She didn't know why, but she'd felt awkward talking about being in his mind. It hadn't been bad, just new and it was still a very awkward thing for her to have done, especially without warning. "I thought I used it all up when I fixed up my shirt last week..." Her clothes were not the best. She'd made them out of a pair of breeches and a tunic too large for her small body. They weren't durable or warm and they were a little too tight, but they covered her. She contemplated asking Drake if maybe she could get some new clothes with the money they'd gotten today, but decided that since they weren't a necessity, she'd keep her mouth shut. What they really needed was food. Winter was coming soon and fruit would be out of the question for a few months, so fish and bread were going to have to sustain them. Fruit was much, much easier to steal. |

he nodded a little, and smiled, taking a book and reading while she was in the 'shower'. He laughed a litle when she asked about the thread, and he tossed a spool to her, pulling it out of his pocket. "Pinched it off a tailor earlier today, forgot to tell you. Will that do?" He yawned a little bit, and took his knife sheath off his leg, then pulling about twenty knives of various sizes off parts of his body, then he put them all aside and leaned back on his cot. There were two now, since... they had reached a point where sharing a bed would have been awkward... the shower curtain had been there a bit longer. He had worried for a time as they both grew up, and had to do more things apart, but that was the nature of it... she was a girl, after all, and he... well he wasnt. They had stayed together, though, despite his fears that they would drift apart. Still, occasionally... there was a little bit of an awkwardness betwen them that hadnt been there before. Most of the time it never showed, but sometimes... like the time just now, with her entering his mind... there would be a blush, and some embarassment, something like that. Still... they had always been happy together... |

She stopped the spool and then set it down beside her ragged clothes with a small frown. Maybe if she just went out and bought the clothes on her own... She didn't have to tell Drake how much money the two coin purses had had in them. Guh! That was no use. First of all, Drake would notice the new clothes for sure. Secondly, that would be lying to Drake and she couldn't do that. She felt guilty just for thinking about it! And they needed the money for food anyways. She had already decided that. It was the right thing to do. Removing the purses from her rope belt, she called out Drake's name and then plopped them down on his side of the shower curtain so that he could put the money with the rest of their stash. She had cleaned off her body, including the cuts by now, but her body was still sore. And she was not looking forward to putting her clothes back on after she'd just gotten clean. Looking around, the only thing she could find to wrap around herself, besides her clothes of course, was her towel. Sighing, she wrapped it tightly around her body, making sure nothing embarrassing was showing. The top part across her back stung, but she paid no attention to the pain as she floated the washtub over to the unclean water area, where it got dumped out. Her clothes and the spool she floated over to one of the pillows - she would work on it later. For now, she stepped out from behind the shower curtain tentatively and, keeping her eyes glued to the floor, quickly made her way over to her cot. She wrapped her blanket around her before she lay down carefully on her stomach. Her arms came up to rest on the pillow beneath her head. The towel loosened, but stayed. At least it wasn't digging into her back now. "I think I'm going to head to bed early... I've got a bit of a headache." She turned her head and smiled over at Drake one last time before closing her eyes. |

"Got it." He picked the money up, and put it in their 'stash', a rather well hidden hole in the wall where they put anything that was of value. When she came out, he nodded to her a little bit and smiled softly. "Night, isabel. I'll see you in the morning." he walked back to his cot, and took his book up again, but something caught his eye. Drake stood, and walked over, then kneeled near it - her clothes. he picked her shirt up, and looked at it. Her clothes had been sewn and resewn so damned many times, even more than his own... He didnt have quite as much trouble as she did, though. Especially not lately... He dropped the clothing in a pile again, then looked over at her, watching her sleep for a time. Still, after all this time, she still meant as much to him as she had on that first night - more, even. It wasn't something to be taken lightly... and she was a battered girl. He was beaten even worse than she was from their work, but he never let her see... it was probably the only thing he kept from her. but the nature of their relationship only worked one way - if one of them faltered, even slightly... they were both going to lose... maybe even their lives. He hated seeing her in the constant pain she was in... and tomorrow... tomorow she wanted to face her biggest demon? He took a deep breath, then took a pen and some paper and scribbled a note, in case she woke: Went out for some air. Don't worry, nothing dangerous, I won't go far. Love, Drake. Leaving the note next to her, he climbed up the ladder and vanished into the dark without a sound. |

She heard him and smiled faintly. "Night..." she murmured, halfway asleep already. It was only another minute or so before she was completely gone. Her dreams were restless, but she didn't move. She saw herself as a child of five once again, still at her old Master's house and shuddered. She saw her mother, so beautiful, even when she was working her tailbone off and covered in sweat and soot. Then she saw her old Master, looking cruel as ever. His malicious eyes and smile alone were enough to scare a lion. He threw his head back and began to laugh maniacally. The sound of the whip in his hand cracking made Isabel wake with a start. The first thing she noticed was that she was on her back. The pain sizzled on her flesh and she rolled over instinctively. The air was cold on her bare flesh. Her bare... what?? Scrambling frantically, she grabbed around for her towel, her blanket, anything! Her towel was nowhere to be found, but her blanket was there, a little above her waist. She pulled the blanket up and looked over to Drake's cot only to find it empty. He wasn't anywhere, she noticed - not even up in the bathroom area. This scared her for a few moments, until she finally saw the note lying there on top of her clothes. Slowly, she gathered the blanket around her, just in case he returned soon, and made her way over to the pillow. He was outside, on the surface. And she was here, alone, in the aqueducts... How had he lived here all alone? When he was here with her, it was home, happy, comfortable. When she was alone, it was just a cold, scary, dark sewer. As much as she hated to admit it, she was scared and felt rather vulnerable. Scooting back over to her cot, she curled up there and closed her eyes. Drake said he wasn't going far... So that meant he should be back soon... Right?... |
