Forgotten: No one can escape. A great flash emerged above all of Aronia leaving each with short term memory loss. Years lost to the fog of amnesia. Can no one recall? That appears to be the case. Whom or what is responsible? Panic has stricken the globe. Will civilization collapse? What will emerge from the reset? Only time will tell. To each citizen of Aronia from the Global Gazette, we wish all luck.

He was as nice as he looked. Swallowing back her tears, she pulled the blanket tightly around herself and slowly sat up. Her eyes moved up to his and she shook her head slowly, smiling a bit.

"I know I'm safe here."

Looking to the fruit and cheese, her mouth began to water. She hadn't even thought about food today - she'd been more concerned about getting away... in one piece. Had she brought food with her, the dogs would have smelled it immediately. Taking the cheese offered to her, she nodded in thanks and began to nibble on it slowly. After a few moments of silence, she took a small breath and let it out.

"I'm..." She bit her lip and paused. "You promise you won't tell anyone? I don't want to go back! If he finds out that I got away... My mommy... She's not safe anymore... You promise you won't tell anyone?"
Wash: I think they really captured his essence.
Kaylee: He looks kinda mean.
Wash: That's sorta what I meant.
Simon: This must be what going mad feels like.
Kaylee: Everywhere I go, his eyes keep followin' me...

He cut another piece for himself, then put the knife and cheese down on a plate he had also stolen, in case she wanted some more - he doubted she would try to stab him... and he was more than able to take care of himself.

"Shh, not so loud, these pipes go places you know."

He smiled a bit though - something about her he liked despite all his best efforts to dislike her. She was a liability, he kept telling himself... why didnt he believe it? Finally, he sighed.

"No... no I'm not going to tell anyone about you. You can stay here, if you want, I guess. I wont make you go back to your mommy..."

God, he just knew this was going to bite him in the ass... but... he just couldnt turn her out on the streets... not like his father had done to him after his mother died... he wouldnt let that happen.

"So.... uh... My name's Drake, what's yours?"

he talked a little awkwardly, but she seemed comfortable enough around him now, anyway

She finished the cheese hungrily. Her stomach, beginning to come to life again, growled. Acting as if she hadn't heard it, she shook her head.

"I don't want to go back to my mommy. I want her here. She'd be safe here." She nodded, as if she had been talking to herself, and took another look around the room. "Yes. Safe. Home." Her quiet voice drifted off as she finally looked back at the boy she now knew to be named Drake.

"Isabel." She smiled faintly as she reached for the knife. Her mother had worked in the kitchen fairly often and sometimes she'd let Isabel come along, so long as all of her jobs were completed already. Her cutting wasn't perfect, but she managed to slice off a good sized piece without injuring herself and ruining the cheese all at the same time.

As she began to nibble on this piece of cheese, she let out a soft sigh. "I'm six. Where's the outhouse?"

"You mean... you werent running from her? Shes not safe either? Oh... um, I usually go in the sewer duct, its up that other ladder and to the left"

He pointed to the ladder, then picked up a lantern and lit it with one of the candles

"You dont need me to come with you, do you?"

He didnt think so... she was old enough to go on her own, he thought, and.... it would be kind of awkward. Not to mention this new one... the mother was in danger? Crap... well that was sad, but what the hell was he supposed to do about it? he was a theif, not a freaking hero... he hoped that little girl didnt expect him to risk his skin for some lady hed never met. He ran smack into her on the street, and he had taken her in out of pure kindness, it ended there. No freaking more good deeds, she could stay, but that was as much risk as he was going to take, dammit. he wasnt going to let things get out of hand.

"It smells, try not to let it bother you..."

"Master will beat her until he finds me," she said with a slight frown. Taking another bite of cheese, her eyes went up the ladder and imagined turning left as he'd directed. She thought she'd smelled something foul up there. With a nod, she set the cheese down onto the plate and stood, dropping the blanket onto the pillow behind her.

"I can make it on my own." The candle inside the lantern twitched and went out. "Don't need the light, either." She smiled and made her way across the small room to the ladder. As soon as the darkness began to envelop her, she closed her eyes and began to feel along the walls and the ladder with her mind. Why waste his candles when she could see perfectly fine this way? He needed the light more than she.

She took little time in finding the area where the outhouse was. She didn't even need to try, due to the smell. It didn't take her long to finish her business. Anything to get her out of that ucky smelling area!

When she returned to Drake's room area, she smiled at him again and sat down, wrapping herself back up in the blanket. It was much better than the scratchy thing she'd had at the master's house. Everything here was better, even if it wasn't even up to normal people's living standards. She was free here, the company was nice, the outhouse wasn't as clean (which was understandable because there were people assigned to clean the one back at the house), but on the whole, it was a comfy little place. And it was quiet and secluded - the perfect place to hone her skills without the world watching.

Oh, great. So now he was going to have THAT hanging over his head.

"I... see."

he was prety much silent as she went and came back, though he ate an apple while he waited, and did one hell of a lot of thinking. No. I am NOT helping her save her mother. Absolutley not. Not today anyway. Dammit NO! What is wrong with me...? Why do I even care...? he had spent the last seven years being kicked, hit, stabbed, cut, stepped on... he had thought he had gotten rid of his concience... but here she walked in, and just like that...

"Show me in the morning, alright..? I... I'll see what can be done. But I'm not making any promises got that?"

He pointed at her chest, trying to make sure she did get that, but he couldnt stay stern for long. Finally he put his arms around her and held her against his chest, shaking his head.

"you just walk in here and make me like you, huh..? Can't say I'm too happy about that... except that somehow I am... if that makes any sense at all..."

Once her cheese was in her hand, and partly in her mouth as well, she nestled up to Drake and closed her eyes, munching quietly for a moment. He spoke up finally and she opened her eyes, looking up. A smile escaped her lips when he agreed to help her, even though she hadn't asked.

Leaning back as he pointed at her chest, she tilted her head to the side, staring over with a look of innocence, mingled together with sorrow. As his stern facade cracked, she grinned and even let out a small giggle, wrapping her small arms around him.

"Thank you, but I'm not ready to get my mommy. You can see the house tomorrow, though. I'll take you there. Midday, when the Master is taking his nap and Gretl is on kitchen duty. I'm not ready to get my mommy. Not for awhile..."

She drifted off again somewhat, her eyes fixed on the shelf. An end book fell over, creating a sort of domino effect and Isabel gasped. "I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to..." Her eyes widened, fear evident in those big sapphire orbs.

*he smiled a little, and nodded*

"You're smarter than I thought... youre right, we go back now, they'll be expecting, thats a good plan."

He smiled, and held her gently, drifting off a bit himself, until the books fell, and he snapped awake again. He was confused for a moment, then he pulled her off of him and looked at her carefully. He had known there was an odd smell about her... she was psychokinetic! Dammit! Thats why I trusted her, she was messing with... no, she couldnt have been, I would have figured it out now. His anger melted into curiousity, and he looked a litte wary.

"you really are more than you appear, arent you, isabel...?"

Finally he shook his head, and sighed.

"You havent been in my head, have you? because if you're going to do that, I'll kick you out right now, no matter how much i've enjoyed the company, you get that?"

Her look of fear only doubled as an expression of realization and anger made their selves evident on Drake's face. She nodded slowly, hesitantly, unsure how he would react. She'd never known anyone else like herself, but then the only people she'd ever known were those who worked for the Master.

"No! Please don't! I promise I didn't do anything!" Tears swelled up in her eyes, but she choked them back and shook her head continuously. The books on the shelves flew up into the air, landing on a few rugs nearby, but she didn't seem to notice them. "I can't do that. I can only move things - not even big things. I promise I wasn't in your mind. Please let me stay..."

Collapsing onto the pillow, she curled up again, into a fetal position. Digging her fingers into her eyes, she forced herself not to cry. 'Can't cry... can't cry... Master likes it too much... Mommy said not to cry...' Master wasn't here, but that didn't stop her from fearing his presence, his unmerciful whippings which she was sure her mommy was enduring at this very moment, his sinister, cruel laughter that only got louder and more evil when his victims cried, no matter what kind of pain he made them endure.

"Please... don't..."

He listened to her, wondering if she might be lying, but when she started to cry, he shook his head and picked her up in his arms again, wrapping them both in the blanket

"Don't cry. I do believe you, Isabel... but here's the deal. You need to always be truthful with me. No secrets, okay? You dont keep any from me, and I won't keep any from you. I dont mind you being able to move things with your mind, its a gift, I think its great."

He ran his fingers through her hair, very gently, lovingly even. How had they both become so important to each other so quickly..? He was giving her protection and a home... she had given him back his humanity.

"I... I'm part dragon. its hard to explain how, but if I ever look... scaly... thats why. Dont ever be afraid, I'll never ever hurt you... thats my secret. The rest I can tell you some other time, alright..? Now we both know why the people above dont like us, don't we...? but we like each other just fine, right...?"

he hoped she wouldnt be frightened... that would be hard to take...
