It was always what I wanted to do. I don't know why I never tried to follow up on that dream. It's sad now that I think about it. :( |

Well if you want to be a writer than nothing is stopping you. What I learned about writing is this, it is very easy to get intimidated, I for one am filled with self doubts about my abilities, but writing is a way we express ourselves and if other people enjoy our writing than more the better. If you have anything from your early days of writing, go back and write more about it, after all it never hurts to try. |

You have Nothing to Lose by Trying . Either by typing into a computer or writing on pads or in Notebooks or even using an old fashioned Typewriter. They can be found at thriftshops & ribbons can be found online . Every time we Post , we Write so I know you Can write ,so can I ,even if nobody else ever sees it . |

I got my practice as a writer writing stories for myself in high school. I would come home late from McDonalds (my first job), and start typing on my Commodore 64 on a word processor that I wrote myself. (The Commodore 64 was the last computer to make programming easy for the home user. I could write in BASIC and Assembly Language.) A decade later, I started reading Xena fan fiction on the nascent internet. In January 1999 I wrote my first Xena story, and had a grand time writing new stories up through the close of the television series. The urge to write again has not struck since then, I think I worked it out of my system. Thanks to the internet, I got feedback from hundreds of strangers on my writing. That's something that unknown writers could never have gotten back in the days where you needed a major publisher to look at your work. My advice to any aspiring writer is to read other people's work in the genre you like, and find some BAD writers. When you tell yourself that you know you can write better than half the people out there, then you can start typing. Don't look at the masters and discourage yourself, look at the BAD writers for inspiration. That's what I did, and I never looked back. :) -Ogami |

Ah , but Good & Bad writing can be subjective . I have had some Interesting discussions on That subject . It was good that I was not standing next to some of these folks or fur might have flown . I seem to like a Lot of stories that others don't . The reason for this seems to be that others insist on picking apart every tiny detail whereas I am interested in a Ripping Good Yarn . For Example . Questions of Cannon & Science come up & go right past me most of the time . I don't care about Science in a Fiction Story & I can't figure out how folks can pick the brain of Gene Roddenberry decades after he died to say something is not Star Trek Cannon . I got so sick of reading Gene would Never have Done That in comments about Enterprise . He Couldn't do it . He was Dead long before the show happened ! These Shiny folks are certainly entitled to their opinions just as I am entitled to mine . There fore I might read a story & think it was Ripping Good Yarn & others might well Hate it for the reasons I just mentioned or others. That's what makes it fun . |

You're so right about it being subjective. For example, I personally think Stephen King is a terrible writer, like the piano player long since deafened by the sound of applause. But he still sells zillions. (I think of the Dark Tower series as 'mental diarrhea'. Thank goodness I only paid for a few and read the rest at the public library for free.) Speaking of a show long after Gene's demise, what about "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda"? Maybe they should have called it Majel Barrett's Andromeda. Hey, did anyone notice that Kevin Sorbo has made a new Walking Tall movie? They have it here in the PX in Afghanistan, Walking Tall 2 starring Kevin Sorbo. I wasn't too impressed with The Rock's version, but I'm glad Sorbo is getting work after Andromeda. -Ogami |

Mark: What I've been told by professional writers, is that you must write, write, then write some more. When you get tired of writing, write about it until you're not. It has a lot to do with patience, and the willingness to keep trying and sending new work into publishers for reviews. Me, I don't have this thing called, patience, so I'm not sure I could ever be a good "professional" writer. I hope people enjoy my non-professional writing (even if it's only online), and if they do, that's great. If one day people are willing to pay to see what I'm writing, even better! I doubt however, that I'll seek to become a professional writer by choice...with me, it's gonna have to be an accidental thing. :P |

Mark: I would enjoy seeing Kevin Sorbo cast as Ming The Merciless, Ruler of the Universe, in a real non-campy remake of Flash Gordon. I never thought of Ming as a totally evil man, just one that was power-crazed, and needing a bit of a slapping around a bit. |

Movie is called Walking Tall : the Payback & Kevin also just finished several episodes of the recently finished series The O.C. on Fox . The movie has just recently come out on dvd 7 I haven't seen it either but friends at Sorbonnes have & liked it . I saw one OC show , he was good . I couldn't get signal for the others . I have seen him in some sitcoms & laughed myself to illness . He is Hysterically funny . Dharma & Greg,2 & 1/2 Men,According to Jim & one on Fox about a dating service . I can't remember the name but he played a Priest who had quit & wanted the service to help him learn to date .Then he went for the Owner played by Holly Robinson Peete . Can't fault the character's eyesight . |

Like I said, I'm glad Sorbo is getting work. I was watching the DVD of Romancing the Stone the other day, and I was surprised to learn that Michael Douglas was the producer. He was a producer in those days, and he couldn't find a male actor to play the lead in the movie. After reading the Stone script, the male actors passed on the role because the female is the lead, not the male. So Douglas put himself in as the lead and the movie was a hit for all involved. I think Sorbo could find his niche in movies or television if the right project came along. Anything where he's not a "Paradine". -Ogami |

Mark: ^ I find that hard to believe, Rob. I've never seen you too lazy to represent, in writing, your opionion (either here, or EI, or other websites). Perhaps you just need the right topic to start a professional career as a writer. |
