Try to imagine yourself in your characters position, nevermind the fact that you are probably at home safe and sound. Here are some hints.

1. Realism vs Absurdity

So your doublesword weilding shotgun toting barbarian has just singlehandidly destroyed the Penguin empire and is now deciding on which of his one thousand girlfriends to marry (I actually read this story...*shudders*) how do you top it?

Don't...yes your main character should do all if not most of the important stuff in the novel or short story, but don't chump change the small guys. Case in point, instead of wiping out the Penguin empire have your barbarian form a group dedicated to overthrowing the tyranical penguins, you get more plot for the buck.

Maybe he should go get a DVD at Wal-Mart and watch that.

It's anticlimatical to defeating the Penguin Empire, but there are some great $9.88 movies out there.

I found The Crush in Wal-Mart's discount bin, starring Cary Elwes (Wesley in The Princess Bride) and Alicia Silverstone. Pretty funny to watch. They had discounted it from $5.50 to $2 it was so bad!

I'm currently reading Harry Turtledove's "World War" series. It's an alternative history series spanning 7 books (at last count). The basic premise is that World War II was interrupted by an alien invasion.

Maybe I'm just getting too old to read science fiction, but I can't help but read these books and just stare at the huge gaping plot holes as I go along. I'm just supposed to enjoy the fantasy, but I find myself nitpicking his work. (Normally I only do this with TV shows like Andromeda or Xena.)

I think all writers should bear in mind to have fun and let the readers have fun too. Sometimes I enjoy authors just for how they make me laugh between the lines of the actual plot. (Like Cary Elwes being traumatized by Alicia Silverstone. Now that's comedy.)
