I guess this would go here since it's "gaming". Anyways, I'm thinking of starting the actual tabletop game. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on which army I should start with. I've seen some people play and I think I know all the basic rules. |

People usually pick armies based on their personalities. For instance, if you like "pinging" people from a distance, choose Tau. If you like swarming people with overwhelming numbers, choose Tyranid. If you like bloodthirsty crazed madmen, choose Chaos Marines. If you like hella-cheap teleportation tactics, choose Space Marines. The list goes on, but thats basically all I know about wh40k. I do know about warmachines, ask away about that one if you want. ;) |

I've got a simple solution for you. You shouldn't start it at all at this point. If you had said this about 2 years ago then I'd say go for it and suggest as a starter army probably the Space Marines (highly overplayed since they're so damn easy to use) or Necrons. I personally started with Eldar (eat that huspa, did pretty damn good with them too! lol, j/k at the eat that part) because I liked their look and how quick/specialized they could be. At this point, it would be stupid to start the tabletop version of that game though. Games Workshop has become ridiculously cheap when it comes to the quality of the models, almost nothing is done die cast anymore whereas before one could get all sorts of good customizable die cast pieces. Also, they jacked up the prices quite a bit for crappier quality models that are not only more frail but less detailed then their previous sets. No, if you want to start a good tabletop game start Warmachine or the off-shot game Horde. It's made by two or three guys who used to work with GW but got sick of how the business handled their products and basically said "fuck the customer, let's do what's cheapest." |

Hell yeah dude. Cryx models are easily the coolest made in warmachines thus far. I used to like the warcaster Iron Lich Asphyxious that even I used him for about 90% of my encounters even if I lost. And oh yeah, Bane Lord Tartarus fucking owns. |

Well, I can't say that I can recommend this online store, but the price is similar to this for all the starter packs if you go to a local gaming store(4 armies = 4 starter packs). http://www.thewarstore.com/product21747.html Cygnar Starter Pack http://www.thewarstore.com/product21749.html Cryx Starter Pack http://www.thewarstore.com/product21750.html Khador Starter Pack http://www.thewarstore.com/product21748.html Menoth Protectorate Starter Pack |

My point exactly. Look at how much the starter for 40k is and I absolutely guarantee the quality will be highly inferior to that of Warmachine. Sure, Warmachine isn't as epic as 40k, not as massive or anything but the game is very solid, the pieces are much cooler looking, it's more affordable, and on top of that you can use the pieces to play the tabletop RPG that the game is based off of. Also, Rectifier, what warmachine/horde army do you play? I've been thinking of starting a Cryx army but haven't had the time to buy anything for it yet, that and only one friend of mine I know down here plays right now. |

I don't actually own any models, but I played once a week back in high school. I used Cryx. The Cryx strategy is to dive in headlong and kill as quickly as possible. I've learned time and time again that preserving forces can end up backfiring against Cryx especially. Typical 500 point Cryx army I would use: Army: Forum Example Faction: Cryx Army Points: 500/500 Victory Points: 16 Iron Lich Asphyxious - Badass caster, situational. Kamikaze style with this guy CAN actually work wonders if used at the right time. He move fast, has a 2 inch reach, if he hits once, every next attack auto-hits, and his ult allows him to regen all his focus, and at the end of his move, if you save enough focus, you can use a little dash move to escape. Deathripper - Think undead metal zerglings Deathripper -They have arc nodes too (very important) Deathripper Skarlock -Slave to help Asphyxious cast spells Bane Lord Tartarus -Badass Solo Pistol Wraith -Only useful in pairs to own a solo/warcaster Pistol Wraith Bane Knights (10) -Each does AMAZING dmg if used correctly Mechanithralls (10) -Meat shields / 'jack killers This list was created by using a program tool named Armies of Immoren by Buhallin on the Privateer Press Forums. |
